Chapter 25: Eight O'Clock
We did not wait for eight o'clock to be afraid of it.
I lit the stove at seven, because Min Gitae was right that the house was cold, and I hated that he was right.
Hyunjin sat on the floor with his back against the daybed and his hands between his knees.
Chan paced from the window to the door and back.
"I want to say it before he comes," Hyunjin said.
"Say it," Chan said.
"I'm not getting on the charter."
Chan stopped walking.
"I thought about it for an hour in the café," Hyunjin said. "I thought about the flat in Seoul and the four guards and the doctor."
"And?"
"And I'd be in a very nice room that nobody could see into, for three months, being quiet."
He looked up at me.
"I've done quiet. I'm done."
Chan crossed the room and put his hand on the back of Hyunjin's neck.
He said something in Korean, short and rough, and Hyunjin laughed and wiped his eye with his wrist.
"What did he say?" I asked.
"He said I'm an idiot and he's coming with me wherever I'm an idiot," Hyunjin said.
"That's about right," Chan said.
At twenty to eight, headlights came up the lane.
Rory's truck stopped in front of the porch, and a second set of lights stopped behind it.
The constable got out of a white pickup with a crest on the door. She was a short woman of about thirty, in a fleece jacket, with a notebook already open.
"Ms. Larkin. You rang about a key."
"Come in," I said. "There'll be a man here at eight you'll want to meet."
Rory came in behind her, stamping his boots.
"I'm only here to look at the stove," he said, and sat down in my armchair like a man who owned it.
The constable looked at the Polaroid of my cat and at the spare key in its plastic bag.
She asked three questions and wrote down the answers.
