Chapter 5: Baby in the Parking Lot

On Tuesday I went to the clinic anyway.

I couldn't go in, so I stood across the street in the staff lot and waited for my ten o'clock patient.

He was seventy-one, he had a new hip, and he had told me he'd see me on Tuesday.

I wanted him to see that I'd come.

Mitchell had driven me and parked at the end of the block.

"I'll be here," he'd said, and opened a newspaper he did not read.

At five to ten a small white car pulled into the lot and stopped in front of me.

Lila got out.

She wore a pale yellow sundress and the white brace, and she held her phone in front of her chest with the camera facing me.

The red light was on.

"Valerie," she said, in a thin shaky voice. "I came to say I forgive you."

I looked at the phone.

"I know you didn't mean it," she went on. "I know you're under a lot of stress. I just want us to be friends again."

"Take that off the record," I said.

"What?"

"The phone. Turn it off."

Her eyes filled, and a tear ran down her cheek on cue.

"You're scaring me," she said to the camera. "You've always been so hard on me, Valerie. You called me an infant. I cried for two days."

I did not say anything.

She stepped closer.

"Everyone thinks I'm sweet," she said, and her voice dropped, so that only I could hear it. "Do you know what that gets me? Anything. Nobody says no to a baby."

"Give me my grandmother's locket," I said.

"Say it louder." She held the phone higher. "Say you want it. Say it's the reason you pushed me."
