Chapter 24: Nobody Behind a Closed Door
The woman at the south gate wore a man's coat over a nightgown and no shoes.
She had a swollen wrist and a split lip, and she would not stop looking behind her.
I knelt in the mud in front of her.
"I'm the Witness of Cinderfell," I said. "Tell me what happened. I believe you."
She stared at me.
"You don't want proof?"
"The proof comes after. You come first."
She started to cry.
She told it in a whisper, with Bram and six fighters standing back in the dark.
Her husband was a Beta in the Ridgeback pack three valleys over.
He shut her in the cellar when she spoke back.
He broke her wrist when she tried the door.
His family said he was under strain, and that she should be patient, and that it was a family matter.
When she finished, I stood up.
"Open the gate," I told the guard. "Bring her in. Wake the Alpha."
"And the husband?" Bram said.
"He's coming," the woman whispered. "He followed me."
Forty minutes later, a car pulled up at the south gate with its lights off, and a heavy man in a good coat got out, calling his wife's name.
He did not get past the fence.
Six Cinderfell fighters stepped out of the dark and stood around him.
"Evening," Bram said.
The man laughed, a little, trying to place the face.
"I'm looking for my wife. She's unwell. She wanders."
"She's not unwell," I said.
He turned.
"Who are you?"
"I'm Rosalind Greer." I came out of the shadow of the gatehouse. "I hold the Witness seat of this pack. Nobody here calls what you did a family matter."
