Chapter 11: Half the Facts

I sat up in the quilt.

"Say that again."

Dominic didn't move. He kept his eyes on the ceiling.

"Six days before your party, one of my men told me Silvio had a car and a driver booked for the Pell Street rooftop," he said. "He said Silvio was collecting on a debt, and the debt was a girl."

"A girl."

"I didn't know your name. I knew the building, and I knew it was mine."

"So you stood in the lobby."

"Yes."

"You waited for me."

"Yes."

"And when I came out, you took the grey suit's wrist and told me to get in your car."

"Yes."

I got out of the bed.

My legs weren't steady, and I held the bedpost.

"You told me you'd find out what Regan meant," I said. "In your car, outside the bakery. You looked me in the eye and promised."

"I meant to find out the rest."

"The rest."

"How much, and who else. Silvio is my underboss. I've known him fifteen years. I had to be sure before I moved." He sat up now. "I was going to tell you."

"When?"

He didn't answer.

"When?" I said again, louder.

"When I had Silvio's head on the table," Dominic said. "So you'd never be afraid of him again."

It was almost a good answer. It would have been, from a different man.

"I said yes to you in a hotel suite," I said. "I said yes with my whole mouth. You told me to. You said you'd be the only man who touches me."

"I will be."

"I said yes thinking you were a stranger who stopped a thug on a sidewalk." My voice cracked. "I said yes thinking I'd chosen."
