Chapter 15: Her Wing, His Money

Tobias's POV

Hannah came through her own door at noon, which she never did, and stood in the hall without taking off her coat.

"Meridian Harbor Trust," she said.

I put down the cane I had been leaning on.

"The bank behind the loans."

"It paid for the atrium at my hospital. Three years ago, the same month as the first loan."

She held up her phone with a photo of the plaque.

"Lyle told me to go and look."

"Lyle talked to you?"

"He offered me a chair and a statement to sign. I tore it up. I'll tell you the rest, but listen first."

I listened.

When she was done, I called the controller and asked him one question.

"The account the sixty-two million went to. What was it called?"

He read it out, and it was the bank.

"The loans," I said, slowly. "My grandfather's loans are from Lyle's bank."

"From a shell with Lyle's name inside it, I'd guess," Hannah said.

"He lent the company money through himself."

"And he was going to call it in when you couldn't pay."

"And when I signed the power of attorney, I'd have signed it all away without knowing."

"Yes."

I sat down on the arm of her couch.

For seven years I had signed what Lyle handed me, and I had called it trust.

"Hannah. The Carrow Foundation has an endowment that isn't the company's. It's mine to direct now, as chair."

"Don't."

"Let me finish. I want to give St. Anne's twenty million for the orthopedic service."

"No conditions, no board seat, no name on a wall."

"And nothing asked of you."

"No."

"You haven't read it."

"I don't have to read it." Her voice was flat, and she was looking at the floor.

"I'll tell you what I believed the day I met you."
