Chapter 10: Insurance

Wesley's POV

Penelope called at midnight and told me to meet her at the hospital's side entrance.

I was already in the building, so I went down.

Six people in white T-shirts stood on the sidewalk outside the revolving door.

They had a banner.

FREE SONIA, JAIL WESLEY.

One of them saw me through the glass and pointed.

"That's him!"

They rushed the door.

I put my shoulder against it from the inside, and a bottle came through the glass anyway.

It burst over my hand.

A line of blood opened across my knuckles, and I looked at it without feeling anything.

Security hauled the six of them back across the lobby.

Over their heads, I saw Penelope Ambrose push through the crowd with a plastic bag held against her chest.

"Get in here," I said, and held the door.

She came through and looked at my hand.

"That needs cleaning."

"It's fine."

"It is not fine. Sit."

She took me upstairs to the empty waiting room outside the ICU and sat me on a vinyl chair under a flickering light.

A first aid kit hung by the door.

She took it down without asking and knelt in front of me.

"This is going to sting."

"I've had worse this week."

She picked a long shard of glass out of the base of my thumb and laid it on a tissue.

Her fingers were steady, and warm through the thin gloves.

She turned my hand over to wrap it, and for a moment she stopped and just held it.

Neither of us said anything.
