Chapter 8: Vice President

For a long moment nobody in the ballroom made a sound.

Then Darius laughed.

It was a loud, bright laugh, and it came a half second too early.

"Ms. Danforth, I'm so sorry. I should have seen it right away." He turned to the room with his hands spread. "This is a stunt. Everyone knows Rowan Group would stoop to anything to win Tolland."

A few people laughed uncertainly.

Claire heard it, and I watched her grab it.

Her thoughts came fast and relieved.

"Of course. Darius is right. Nate would never do this on his own. It's that Rowan woman, she's put him up to it. She just wants to win the bid."

She straightened her shoulders.

Then she picked up the folder, with all the papers inside, and tossed it into my arms.

"Nathan," she said, with her usual cold polish. "Tell Danielle Rowan that Tolland is won on skill. Not with cheap tricks."

I held the folder and said nothing.

Claire stole a quick look at me, as if checking the effect.

Then she licked her lips.

I had known that tell for five years. She did it when she was nervous.

She cleared her throat.

"If you come back to me now," she said, "I might consider giving you a small promotion. You could be a manager."

Somewhere in the room, someone gasped.

A manager.

I looked at the woman I had married.
