Chapter 19: The Fire Company

Eight men in dark blue dress uniforms walked into the ballroom in a column.

They wore white gloves and badge pins, and each carried his cap under his arm.

At their head walked Dale Frawley.

He had shaved, and his gray beard was combed flat, and I had never seen him in a tie.

Behind him came Cody, pale and upright, carrying a banker's box.

Behind Cody came a heavy man in his sixties with a cane, who stopped just inside the doors to look at the chandeliers.

I knew him.

I had last seen him on a barn floor with a defibrillator pad on his chest.

"Sorry we're late," Dale said to the room. "The roads from the south are slick."

My mother came down off the stage.

"Mr. Frawley," she said. "You are very welcome."

"Mrs. Hallett. Ma'am. The fire company thought somebody ought to be here."

He looked at the stage, and at the woman standing alone on it.

"For her," Dale said.

The hall had gone silent.

Veronica stood with one hand on the microphone stand, and her knuckles were pale.

"Dale," she said. "This is private."

"You've made it public," Dale said. "Thirty minutes ago I'd have agreed with you. But you've got three hundred folks listening to a story, and I've got something to add."

He turned to the heavy man with the cane.

"Go on," he said.

The man with the cane walked down the aisle one step at a time.

He stopped at the foot of the stage.
