Chapter 19: The Basement

Sabina called at nine on Thursday night, and her voice was a whisper.

"They're burning the files tomorrow at dawn."

I was sitting on Cass's couch with the lunchbox in my lap, because Cass had refused to let it out of her sight for five days.

"Whose files?"

"The old ones. Everything before 2015, according to the minutes. The board voted this afternoon to dispose of records past retention." Sabina's breath shook. "That includes the basement of the Wing. That's where the second books are."

"Can you get them?"

"I tried. The basement has a keypad, and she changed the code on Tuesday. I'm not on the list."

Cass leaned in from the other side of the phone.

"Who has the old key?"

Sabina was silent.

"Stefan," I said.

"Rule three," Cass said, flatly. "He doesn't get a vote."

"He isn't voting," I said. "I'm asking him for a favor."

I called him from the porch.

He answered on the first ring.

"I need you to open a door," I said. "Tonight. And I need you not to ask what's behind it."

"I have the master from when I was a kid," Stefan said. "It still works on the lake door. She never changed the lock, because she forgot it existed. Where are you?"

"Cass's."

"Eleven o'clock. Wear dark clothes."

At eleven, I stood on the seawall behind St. Brendan's in the black work jacket, with the wind off the lake in my face.

The Gorski Wing was a dark brick shape above me, with one security light burning on the north corner.
