Chapter 15: Not Yet

At seven in the morning Nandini opened her front door, looked down the stairwell, and came back in.

"Your husband is on the landing," she said. "Sitting on the top step. In yesterday's shirt."

Mira put down her tea.

"He didn't come in last night. The guard says he slept in his car and asked for nothing."

"Of course he did," said Mira.

She had lain awake until three listening to the building settle. Twice she had gone to the window and seen his car under the streetlight.

Each time she had gone back to bed without deciding anything.

"Do I let him in?" said Nandini. "Or do I bring him a blanket and a samosa and tell him to wait for the verdict?"

"Let him in."

Dev came into the hall. There was a crease from the car seat across his cheek.

He sat on the floor by the door, where he had sat on every visit.

Nandini put a steel tumbler of tea beside him and went into the kitchen, loudly.

"The family group has eighty messages," Dev said. "I turned it off."

"What are they saying?"

"My uncles want to know whether to come to the house today or tomorrow." He rubbed his eyes. "Papa shut himself in the study. Rhea hasn't come out of her room."

"Is she eating?"

"The cook left a tray outside her door. It's still there."

Mira looked at her hands. She hated that she wanted to know.

"Say what you came to say, Dev."

He picked up the tumbler. He put it down again.

"The family lawyer called at six," he said. "He says if you file a police complaint about the forged signature, it will be in the newspapers by Friday."
