Chapter 11: Five Minutes Apart

I took out my phone and set it on the table beside the pouch.

I pressed record, and the red dot lit.

"I'm recording this," I said. "Sit down, Dean."

He didn't sit.

He stood in the doorway with his hands at his sides and looked at his mother.

She would not look at him.

"Mom, I can explain."

"Explain it to her," Patricia said.

He turned to me.

I had seen him cry three times in the last week.

This time his face only worked, and no sound came.

"Gwen called me on a Saturday," he said. "Two weeks before. She said she'd been reading about the blend. She said she wasn't sure it was safe for you to keep drinking it."

"And you kept bringing it."

"She said she'd taken it herself in her own pregnancy. She said it would be out of your system in time, as long as you held out until the due date."

"But you wrote 'I'll keep her home.'"

"She said if you went in early, they'd find it and blame us. They'd call someone. They could take the baby, Willa. She said that happens."

"She said that to you."

"She said it to me."

"And you believed her."

"I was scared."

"Of what?"

"That they'd take him."

"Dean, you got a message saying the tea could start my labor, and your first thought was what the hospital would say to you."

He didn't answer.

"You didn't throw the tea out."

"No."

"You didn't tell me."
