Chapter 9: Diner

I did not go to the house.

I texted Dean one line, and he answered in under a minute.

"The corner diner on Pico. Twenty minutes."

I picked the place and the booth by the window, where everyone could see us.

Jenna took a stool at the counter with her back to the room.

Dean was already there when I came in.

He had shaved badly and he looked ten years older.

There was a cup of coffee in front of him that he had not touched.

He started to stand when he saw me, and then sat again.

"Thank you for coming."

"I came to ask you three questions."

"Anything."

I put the pouch on the table between us.

He looked at it and then looked away.

"My doctor read the label," I said. "Blue cohosh and pennyroyal. They start contractions. They make you bleed."

"Willa..."

"My doctor said no herbal anything. At the very first visit. You were sitting next to me."

"I know."

"So question one. Did you know that?"

"Yes. I mean, I heard her. But Gwen said her blend was different. She said it was a doula blend, made for pregnant women. She made it for her own clients."

"Did you read the label?"

"No."

"You never once looked at what you were putting into my mug."

"I trusted her," he said.

His voice cracked on it.

"I would never have given you anything that could hurt you. I swear on my mother. I swear on our son."

I let the word son sit there between us.

He heard it too.

He covered his mouth and cried silently for a minute, and I waited.

I did not touch him.

When he was done, I asked the second one.
