Chapter 10: Sam's Orchard

Sam's POV

I have stood at the back of a lot of rooms in my life, and I know how to watch.

You learn it in an orchard.

You stand still, and you notice which tree is going wrong before the rest of the row does.

I was standing at the back of my own barn, and I was watching Adele Halvorsen.

She had just tapped her glass, and not one person in a hundred and four had told her no.

Leah stood by the poster with her ring at the bottom of her husband's champagne.

She was not crying.

She had her chin up and her hands loose at her sides.

She was watching Adele and waiting.

I'd spent the whole week telling myself not to look at her.

I'd done a bad job.

"Dear," Adele said into the quiet. "Delaney. Will you come up here?"

At the back wall, my sister jumped.

She had been standing by the tractor in that green dress for an hour.

She looked as though she wished the tractor would fall on her.

"Come, come. Don't be shy."

Delaney walked up the middle of the floor.

People moved their feet out of her way and then looked at them.

I took one step forward and made myself stop.

She was twenty-seven, and she was a grown woman who had done a terrible thing.

But she was also still the kid who had cried in the truck when our mother died.

I was the one who had driven.

Adele took her hand and held it up between them.

"I want to say something to all of you who have loved my family," she said.
