Chapter 12: After the Lights
By ten o'clock the barn was empty.
Bev had taken Delaney home in her van.
Delaney had a blanket around her shoulders and the green dress balled up on the back seat.
Lukas had gone out the side door behind his mother, saying nothing.
The last guest to leave was the pastor.
He stopped in front of me and took both my hands.
"I am so sorry, Leah," he said. "I will never pray over you like that again."
Then it was just the long tables, the white roses, and the lights buzzing in the rafters.
And Sam, at the far end of the barn, stacking chairs.
I went to clear the head table.
Lukas's flute lay on its side by the poster, where it had rolled off the edge when he walked away.
It had cracked in half.
My ring sat in a puddle of flat champagne among the pieces.
I reached for it.
The edge of the glass opened the heel of my hand.
I didn't feel it right away.
I stood there holding the ring, and then I looked down and saw blood running into my sleeve.
"Leah."
Sam was across the floor before I had finished looking.
He took my wrist and turned my hand over.
"It's not deep," I said.
"It's deep enough. Come on."
He took me out the barn door and across the gravel to the farmhouse.
One hand held my wrist up above my heart the whole way.
It was a kitchen like the kitchen I'd grown up in.
A yellow table, a window over the sink, and a clock shaped like an apple.
He sat me down in a chair and pulled a first-aid box out of a cupboard.
