Chapter 4: The Brother

"My sister," the man said again.

Up and down Hillcrest Drive, curtains moved.

A woman across the road came out onto her porch with a coffee mug and did not even pretend to water anything.

"Lower your voice," I said. "This isn't the place."

"You mailed her to the whole county."

"I mailed a picture of a hand to a hundred and twelve people."

"It isn't a hand."

He pulled the card out of the envelope and jabbed his thumb at the bottom corner.

On the bare hip, just above the sheet, was a tiny apple blossom in black ink.

I hadn't looked that closely.

"She got that the week our father died," he said. "I drove her. I sat in the chair and held her coat."

I looked at his face, and then I looked at the blossom.

"Who are you?"

"Sam Fisk."

He said it flatly, and then I knew.

"Delaney's brother. The orchard."

"When our father died, somebody left four trays of food on my porch, Mrs. Halvorsen.

"My neighbor said it was you."

"Four trays. Chicken and rice."

"Then you know she's not the kind of girl who does this."

"I know she sent me the photograph first."

His jaw went tight.

"She what?"

I took out my phone, found the message, and held it up to him without a word.

He read it.

"Happy seventh. He's asleep, so I'm saying it for him."

I watched his face change a little at a time, and it was not anger now.

It was something older and heavier.

"That's her number," he said.
