Chapter 9: The Party
By seven o'clock on Saturday night, the barn was full.
I had expected forty people, maybe sixty, and the rest of the invitations held in a drawer somewhere out of curiosity.
A hundred and four came.
They came up the gravel in coats and furs and good wool suits, carrying the glossy cards in their hands.
Bev's white roses stood on every table.
At the head of the room, on an easel, was a poster the size of a door.
It was the invitation cover, blown up as big as the print shop could make it.
Gray sheets. A bare hip. A man's hand with a gold ring.
Nobody could look anywhere else.
I stood beside it in a navy dress with my hair down.
I shook hands with the pastor and the hospital treasurer and the women from page nine.
"Thank you for coming," I told every one of them. "I'm sorry about the ballroom."
Sam stood by the barn doors in a clean shirt, with his arms folded.
He gave me a single nod.
At ten past seven, Lukas came in.
He wore the black suit he'd worn at our wedding.
He walked up the center of the barn, and the crowd parted for him and then closed behind.
He stopped at my side and did not look at the poster.
"I'm here," he said. "Like I promised."
"You're on time. Thank you."
"Please don't make this worse."
"I haven't started."
Delaney came in a few minutes later.
She was wearing a long green dress and nothing on her ears.
She stood against the back wall by the tractor, and every head turned to look at her and then turned away.
I saw her find Lukas across the room, and I saw him not look back.
Then the doors opened one more time.
Adele came in alone, last of all.
