Chapter 10: The Text He Never Sent

"It came from your number," I said.

My voice sounded far away.

"I kept it for years. I could recite it. 'Don't wait for me. This isn't your world. Don't call me again.' It was sent at seven minutes past three."

Keith sat down on the edge of the guest bed, hard.

The towel still hung over the smoke detector above him.

"I never wrote that," he said. "I'd have remembered writing that."

"Then who did?"

"I don't know."

"It was your phone."

"I know it was my phone!" He pressed the heels of his hands against his eyes. "I'm not saying you're lying. I'm saying I lived eleven years believing something different."

"What did you believe?"

He took his hands away.

"That you called," he said. "A few days after you came out to Los Angeles. You phoned the set and said you'd met someone else, and you didn't want to see me."

I stared at him.

"I never said that."

"I wasn't on the phone. I was shooting twelve hours a day. My assistant took the message."

"Which assistant?"

He didn't answer right away.

The rain came down harder.

"We had one on that show," he said slowly. "He picked up my coffee. He answered my messages when I was in makeup. He was about my age. He..."

He stopped.

I could see him laying the pieces out in the dark.
