Chapter 12: The Door Opens

I took the phone out of his hand and set it on the bed.

Then I knelt in front of him on the carpet and held his face.

"You would have come out," I said.

"In my costume. In front of the whole crew."

"I know."

"I looked for you." He closed his eyes. "I called every number in Bellmore I could find. Your mother hung up on me. I thought you'd told her not to talk to me."

"She hung up on you because I told her you'd left me."

"Eleven years," he said.

"Eleven years."

He opened his eyes.

They were wet and green and very close, and there was no one in the world I wanted to be looking at.

"Rule one," I said. "Touch only when the cameras need it."

"The camera's in the clock downstairs."

"I know where the camera is."

"Mara."

"Yes."

"I'm going to kiss you, and I'm not going to stop at one."

"Then do it."

He didn't move, so I kissed him first.

It was not gentle.

My hands were in his hair, and his arms went around my back, and he pulled me up off the floor and onto his lap.

The bed creaked.

His mouth was hot and unsteady, and he kissed me like he had waited eleven years.

I kissed him back until I couldn't breathe.

He tasted of salt.
