I flew on Tuesday because the wind did not care what anybody had said in my hangar.
Eloy chased me anyway.
When I put the blue down at the foot of the ditch road, his truck was already there with the engine off.
He did not say a word about the night before.
He walked to the headgate, where the Armijo ditch leaves the river, and put both hands on the iron wheel.
Water was running in the ditch, brown and fast.
The mayordomo opens and shuts that gate every morning of the growing season, and his father did, and his father's father.
He turned the wheel a quarter turn.
The water dropped a hand's width, and the roar of it eased.
"I called my lawyer last night," Eloy said, without looking around. "I can have an account open for him by Friday. Land, money, a house in any town he picks."
"Does he pick?" I asked.
"He picks anything. My mother never stands in front of a camera."
"Your mother never stands up at all."
"She's sixty-six." He turned then. "She's carried one thing for thirty-three years, and he wants to hang it on a television screen."
