Chapter 32: Pearl Cakes
"I am," I said.
The old nurse looked at me for a long moment.
Then she nodded once, and handed me her ladle.
"Then you'd better learn," she said. "Because the last time you tried bread, Corwen used it as an anchor."
We started three days before.
The old nurse wouldn't let anyone else in the kitchen.
Except Aurek.
"He asked me first," she said. "Last summer. He's been practicing."
"He has?"
"Every week. In secret. He's terrible." She sniffed. "He's getting better."
Aurek turned red from the collar of his fish sweater to his hair.
"I said I'd make the cakes," he said. "I meant it."
"You said you'd make them," I said. "I'm making them. You can help."
"That's what I meant."
We went down to the drowned stores together for the sugar.
The little painted jars were still there at the end of the shelf, where he'd found them on my second night in the Wreck Deep.
He picked one up and turned it over in his hands.
"My mother made pearl cakes for my Name Days," he said. "With this sugar. In this ship."
"I know. You told me once."
"In the other life?"
"In the other life."
He handed me the jar.
"Then they're hers," he said. "And yours."
The old nurse showed me everything.
How to grind the grain fine enough.
How much oil, and when.
How to roll the dough into balls the size of a hatchling's fist.
