Chapter 19: The Toast, Again
Nobody at the table moved.
Porter's mother laughed, a thin high sound.
"Richard. That's enough."
"It is not nearly enough." He kept his eyes on me. "Fourteen years ago I left a fundraiser drunk, in my silver Mercedes, in the rain."
"Richard!"
"I crossed the center line on Route 9, and I hit a gray sedan."
Forty people stopped breathing.
Porter stood up so fast his chair fell over.
"Dad."
"There was a man inside." Richard's voice cracked and kept going. "A father, driving to his daughter's school recital. He had flowers on the back seat."
I felt Keir's hand move from my knee to my fingers, and I held on.
"I got out of the car," Richard said. "I looked at him on the road. And I picked up my phone, and I didn't call an ambulance."
"Stop," Porter's mother whispered.
"I called my lawyer. I said, 'I need you now, and I need you quiet.'"
"Who was the lawyer?" Porter said.
"A young associate. Millicent's mother." He swallowed. "She made sure there was no Mercedes in the report. She paid a boy ten thousand dollars to say he had seen nothing."
"That's a lie," Porter's mother said. "That's slander. Someone put him up to this."
"A hotel dishwasher," Richard said. "Nineteen years old. He pulled the man out of the wreck and heard what he said before he died."
Every head at the table turned to Keir.
He sat perfectly still.
His grip on my hand was iron.
"I made Millicent's mother a partner," Richard said. "I sent a card to the grave every year, and a florist's bill with it, and I told myself that was enough."
