Chapter 20: What I Want

Keir's POV

We got home at two in the morning.

The paramedics had taken Richard out on a stretcher with a detective walking beside it.

The emergency doctor said his heart would hold, and the detective said he would be charged the moment he could sit up.

I had waited fourteen years for those two sentences.

I stood in my own kitchen and felt nothing.

Millicent leaned in the doorway in her green dress, with her shoes in her hand.

"You haven't said anything in an hour," she said.

"I'm trying to find the part where I'm glad."

"Is it there?"

"No." I turned around. "It was never about him saying it. It was about someone hearing it."

"I heard it."

"I know."

She crossed the kitchen and set a white envelope on the counter between us.

The flap was still sealed.

"The ninth," she said. "I took it out of the safe. I haven't opened it."

I looked at my own handwriting.

"Why not?"

"Because I wanted you to be standing here when I did."

She slid her thumb under the flap.

It tore open, slowly.

She read the page, and I watched her read it.

I knew what it said.

I had written it six months ago in the parking lot of her building, after I saw the ring.

"Millicent," she read aloud, very quietly. "I'm told you're engaged. If you're happy, burn this. If you ever aren't, I live forty minutes from Boston, and the gate opens for you."

She stopped.

The paper was shaking.

"The gate opened by itself," she said.

"I told my security people to open the gate for you the week I wrote it."

"You were waiting for me."

"For six months, and for nine years before that."

"Keir."

"I raised my glass at the party because I was proud of you," I said. "And I stood at that pillar because I didn't think I had the right to cross the room. I will never stand at a pillar again."

She put the letter down.
