Chapter 21: Wedding Morning

Millicent's POV

My phone rang at seven, and I woke in Keir's bed with his arm across my waist.

The screen said Bree.

I stared at it.

"Don't," Keir mumbled into my shoulder.

"I have to."

"Then answer."

I picked up.

"Milly." Her voice was thick. "Are you awake?"

"Barely."

"Porter's mother is still holding the wedding. She says canceling would make the family look guilty."

"The family is guilty."

"She doesn't see it that way." A shaky breath. "I'm in the bridal suite at the church. Could you come?"

"Why would I?"

"Because I have a decision to make, and I'd like one person in the room who doesn't want anything from me."

I sat up slowly.

Keir opened one eye.

"Go," he said. "I'll drive."

"You didn't ask me again."

"Ask what?"

"If I'm staying."

He lifted his head from the pillow, and his eyes were sleepy and entirely awake.

"Will you stay?"

"Ask me after the wedding."

"That's cruel."

"That's fair." I kissed him. "You made me wait two weeks for the truth."

He laughed into my mouth, and I got dressed.

The church in Back Bay had white flowers on every pew and a string quartet tuning in the side aisle.

Finn waited at the door in his tuxedo, since someone had to be a wedding guest.

"If this goes badly," he said, "I'm sitting on whoever you point at."

"I'm not pointing at anyone."

"You say that now."

Keir parked across the street.

I walked in alone.

The bridal suite was a small room off the sacristy with a gilded mirror, a rack of champagne flutes, and Bree in the middle of it in the ivory gown.
