Chapter 20: The Vote

On Monday at ten to nine I stood in the Maddox lobby in a gray suit with my foundation badge clipped to the lapel.

The guard looked at the badge and then at me.

"Ms. Brennan," he said. "Are you here for the vote?"

"I am."

"The board room is on forty."

"I know where it is. I need the freight elevator, too."

"Why the freight?"

"Because there will be a lot of us."

I had made calls the night before from Maggie's kitchen, standing up.

I called the man from accounts, who had told me my salary in the hallway on my last day.

I called the HR coordinator, the doorman, the driver, and the woman who ran the mail room.

I called three of the former assistants, whose names I'd found in a drawer, and who answered on the second ring as if they had been waiting.

Every one of them said they would come.

I had not expected that.

The directors were already seated when the doors opened.

Nine of them, around the long table, and the chairman at its head with his hands folded.

Elliot sat at the foot in a dark suit.

He looked at me in the doorway, and then at the corridor behind me, and his face changed.

I stepped aside.

They came in quietly, the whole floor.

The man from accounts, in a cardigan, with his reading glasses pushed up.

The HR coordinator, who had a lanyard and a trembling lip.

The doorman, the driver, the mail room, and two women from catering I had never spoken to in my life.

The three old assistants, in their street clothes.

They stood along the walls, and across the back, and in the doorway, and out into the corridor, until there were more than a hundred people in a room built for twelve.
