Chapter 10: The Cellar

I picked up Pippa's apron and held it against my chest.

"She's down there," I said.

"Stay behind me," Merrick said.

"I will. Go."

He went first, with Torin's brass key in one hand and a pocket flashlight in the other.

The stairs were stone, slick with damp, and they went down much farther than any pantry should.

The air turned cold and thick. Under the dust I could smell old smoke.

At the bottom, a heavy door stood a little open.

Merrick pushed it with his boot.

I will never forget what the room looked like.

It was round and stone, as wide as the cabin. A pit sat in the center of the floor, a deep black bowl lined with scorched rock.

The walls were scorched too. Dark streaks climbed up them.

Around the pit stood a ring of iron hooks on chains.

Pippa hung from one of them by her wrists, with her feet barely touching the floor.

"Bri," she croaked. "Took you long enough."

A hunter stood near her with a fist wrapped in her hair.

He looked up, and his face went slack when he saw Merrick.

Merrick crossed the room.

He hit the man once under the jaw, and the hunter folded to the stone.

A second man lunged out from behind the door.

I threw my hand out without thinking.

The silver light flashed. A line of white fire cracked across the room and hit the man in the chest, and he flew backward into the wall and slid down it, groaning.

"Nice," said Pippa weakly.

"Don't talk."

I got her down while Merrick cut the cords with his pocketknife. She fell into my arms and I held her up.
