Chapter 15: Her Own Wolf

Pippa put in her earbuds at ten o'clock and announced it to the whole cabin.

"I am listening to a podcast about bees," she said. "At full volume. For hours."

"Thank you," said Merrick.

"I'm not doing it for you. I'm doing it for her, so she can have a night that isn't about a fire."

She lay down on the couch with the blanket over her head.

I stood in the bedroom doorway with the silver heavy in my chest.

"I want to try something," I said.

Merrick looked up from the stove. "Now?"

"If I reach down the bond, the way Lorna said. If my wolf can hear me." I swallowed. "I think it will be easier with you."

"Why easier?"

"Because last time she came home, I wasn't scared. I was angry, and I was close to you." My face went hot. "And I don't want to be careful. I want to be loud and stupid, and feel her answer."

He crossed the room in three steps.

His mouth came down on mine, and the cabin tilted.

He walked me backward to the bed.

My knees hit the mattress and I sat, and he went down on his knees in front of me.

"This first," he said.

He pushed the flannel up my thighs, and I leaned back on my elbows.

He kissed the inside of one knee, and then the other. His breath was hot on my skin.

"Merrick."

"I know."

He put his mouth on me.

I made a sound I'd never made before.

He licked me slowly, with a flat tongue, and his hands held my hips down when I tried to arch away. Every nerve in me lit.

The silver in my chest began to glow through the flannel.

"There," he muttered against me. "Feel that. Reach for her."
