Chapter 10: Mrs. Kingsford
I stared at the signature until the letters stopped being letters.
The inspector cleared his throat.
"Ma'am. I need you to close the stand."
Behind me, forty people with folding chairs waited to see what I'd do.
"Fine," I said.
He walked back to his car.
We gave the rest of the pie away, and I looked at the date on the yellow sheet.
May 9.
The second Saturday in May.
"Oh," I said.
Cormac was stacking empty tins. "Oh what?"
"The Kingsford Foundation spring luncheon. It's today. At one. The ballroom at the hotel on Boylston." I pulled my apron off over my head. "I planned it last year. I picked the napkins."
"Okay."
"Valerie's going to be there. She signed that complaint as his wife on the morning of his wife's luncheon."
Cormac set the tins down.
"Do you want me to drive?"
"I want you to drive."
The big guy held out his arms for Margo before I even asked.
"Go," he said. "We'll watch a movie. Something with a dog."
I didn't change.
Jeans, a flour-streaked gray sweater and my hair in a knot that had held up since four a.m.
Cormac parked in the hotel garage on level two.
"I'll be right here," he said. "Scream if you need me. I'm very fast for my size."
The ballroom was full of white tablecloths and women in spring dresses and men who owned harbors.
At the front, on a little stage, the Foundation's director was at the microphone.
"And now," she said, "please join me in welcoming someone very special to the Kingsford family. Mother of the Kingsford heir, and the new face of our families program. Mrs. Kingsford."
Applause.
Valerie rose from the head table in pale blue silk, her hair pinned up, Bradford beside her in a gray suit.
