Chapter 15: The Deal
My lawyer read the amendment twice in her tiny office and then put it in her safe.
"Signed May 11," she said. "Two witnesses. A notary. A month before the stroke."
"So it's real."
"It's real. And your husband is going to hate it more than anything you've ever said into a microphone."
She was right.
The full custody hearing was the first Monday in July.
Bradford's lawyer called the amendment the act of a confused old woman. The judge read the date on it and asked him to sit down.
She didn't rule.
She said she'd rule in writing, within the week.
Bradford came to the firehouse the next morning at seven.
He walked into the kitchen in a navy suit, holding a flat white folder, while six men ate eggs.
The lieutenant put his fork down.
"Morning," Bradford said to the room.
Nobody said morning back.
"Clementine. I'd like five minutes."
"You can have them here."
Bradford set the folder on the table.
"Here's my offer. You come home. One year. You take the east wing, I take the west. Separate floors, separate doors. You never have to see me if you don't want to."
The east wing.
The nursery wing.
"And after a year?"
"A divorce. Quiet. Generous." He opened the folder and turned it toward me. "Two million, a house of your choosing, and a bakery in any neighborhood in Boston. Joint custody. You'd see her every day."
I didn't touch the folder.
"A year in that house," I said. "Starting now."
"Starting whenever you like."
"Ending in July."
"Ending whenever the divorce goes through. Say spring."
"Say April," I said.
He didn't blink.
"Margo's first birthday at home with both her parents. That's not a crime. That's a family."
