Chapter 18: Bunker Hill Street

I held Margo tighter against my shoulder.

"Whoever's standing in this room," I said, "next to three heaters in July."

Valerie laughed softly.

"You told me, six years ago, drunk, that a voice in your head said this house burns." She tilted her head. "If it ever does, Clem, who's the crazy wife who knew?"

"You just said it out loud. In a doorway."

"To who?" She spread her hands. "You and a baby."

She turned and padded back down the white hall.

I went back to the blue room and locked the door and pushed a chair under the handle.

I called Cormac.

We talked until four in the morning, quietly, while Margo slept.

By the end of it we had a rule.

"Never alone," Cormac said. "Not with her. Not with him. Not in that wing. Every time you're in that house, somebody sees you, or your phone is recording."

"That's not a life."

"It's a year. Then it's a life."

So that became the rule.

Every weekend that summer I slept in the blue room with Margo beside me.

I recorded every word I said to Valerie.

I kept the housekeeper in sight.

I walked the long way to the kitchen so I'd pass the security camera in the front hall.

The next weekend the heaters were gone from the nursery.

I found all three stacked in the hall closet of the east wing, their cords wrapped neat.

I photographed them there too.

During the week I baked.

A church on Bunker Hill Street rented its basement kitchen by the hour, with a real health permit on the wall.

I took it from midnight to six, four nights a week.

The big guy and the probie took turns sitting up with Margo in the firehouse kitchen.

I sold pies to three cafés on Main Street, then six.
