Chapter 20: The Visit
The cold came in through the open bay door and went straight through my robe.
"Why?" I said.
Valerie shifted her son higher on her shoulder.
"You'd been in Boston one year," she said. "No name. No family. No shoes that fit. And every man who came into that bar asked for your section."
"That's it?"
"The manager wanted to make you head server. The regulars knew your birthday. You didn't even have a real birthday." Her voice stayed small and pleasant. "I wanted you to stop smiling. Just for a while. That's all."
"He stabbed me fifteen times."
"You moved," she said. "You weren't supposed to move."
Red light swept across the bay.
The rig pulled in at the curb.
Valerie walked out to it with her son, climbed into the back without looking at me, and the doors shut.
Cormac came back in.
He looked at my face and stopped.
"What happened?"
I told him.
He didn't say anything for a while.
Then he went to the wall and hit the button, and the big door came down slow between us and the street.
"Nobody heard it but you," he said finally.
"I know."
"Your phone?"
"Upstairs. On the nightstand." I laughed, and it came out wrong. "Never alone. That was the rule. I broke it for one minute."
"You were holding her kid."
"I know what I was doing."
He put his arms around me in the cold, and I let him.
The next morning I called my lawyer.
"I want to see him," I said. "The man from the alley."
There was a long silence on the line.
"He's at the state prison in Norfolk," she said. "Eighteen years. He has to put you on his visitor list himself. That's paperwork, and it's weeks, and he can say no."
"Ask him."
"Clem. Why?"
"Because she told me the truth in a room with nobody in it. I need it in a room with somebody in it."
