Chapter 7: Table Fourteen

The Garland Room was the hall my mother had paid for in full, and by seven o'clock it belonged to Silvio's family.

I had made the seating chart myself, three weeks before.

I had put my mother, my sister and Shane at the head table, right under the flowers, because they were my family.

Bruno studied the chart for a long moment with a pen in his hand.

"Where do you want them now, miss?"

I looked at the room.

The kitchen doors swung open and shut at the far end, and next to them was a round table that nobody wanted, because every waiter passed it with a tray.

"Table fourteen," I said.

"By the kitchen."

"By the kitchen."

Bruno wrote it down and did not smile, which I took as a great compliment.

My mother sat down at table fourteen in her blue suit with her purse in her lap.

Tara sat beside her, still in my dress.

Shane sat on her other side, and he spent the first course looking at the swinging door.

I ate very little.

When the plates were cleared, Silvio stood, and the room went quiet in a ripple, from his table outward.

He didn't tap a glass.

"I'm not a man who talks much," he said. "Most of you know that."

A few people laughed.

"I'll say this. The woman beside me stitched my shoulder closed last night at my kitchen table, and she did it without asking what happened to it." He looked at me. "She has the steadiest hands in Philadelphia, and she takes orders from no one. I'm going to spend the year trying to deserve both."

He lifted his glass.

He said year, and only I knew what the year meant.

The uncle lifted his glass a fraction of an inch.
