Chapter 14: Slow
By sundown I had told my story to three different officers and signed my name six times.
A deputy's cruiser sat at the end of the boathouse road with its engine running.
The sheriff had promised it would stay all week.
Seth walked the whole shed with a flashlight before he let me sit down.
He checked the window latches.
He checked the loft.
He took the cover off the stove, ran his hand up the flue, and knelt to look at the gas line under the floor.
"Seth."
"One more minute."
"You've done it three times."
"My mother's handwriting says careless with fires." He didn't look up. "I'd like to be a little careful."
I crossed the floor and took the flashlight out of his hand.
I turned it off.
The shed went dim and gold from the stove, and the lake slapped quietly under the boards.
"Come here," I said.
He stood up slowly.
He had sawdust in his beard and a long scrape on his knuckles from the parking lot.
"You don't have to do this because you're scared for me," he said.
"I'm not scared."
"Emme."
"I'm alive, and I'm angry, and the person who tried to kill me is in a cell." I took hold of his shirt. "I want you to stop checking the stove and put your hands on me."
His breath went out of him.
"The first time was fast," he said.
"It was."
"I'd like this one slow."
"Then do it slow."
He kissed me, and it wasn't rough this time.
He kissed me like he had all night, with one hand sliding into my hair and the other flat against my back.
I felt my whole body turn toward him.
He backed me up to the bed, and I pulled his shirt off over his head.
I put my mouth on the long white scar across his ribs, and he made a sound low in his chest.
