Chapter 26: The Mark on the Wax

The broken tooth in the grey wax matched the broken tooth on Aldren's key.

Vessa set the wax beside his ring. The clerks stopped sorting their papers, and Kael turned toward the table beside me. His sleeve brushed mine. He did not step in front of me.

Aldren left the iron ring on the table. Vessa's wax held a shallow cut in the shape of a key, one tooth broken at its edge. The matching key sat among the others.

The room's attention shifted to Aldren's hand. He drew it back but left the keys where they were.

'Sera,' one clerk said, pen hovering over the open record. 'Is this the key named in the archive access statement?'

'I did not bring the key. Aldren did.'

I kept the answer small. Vessa had placed the wax. Aldren had brought the ring. If I guided the clerks toward the conclusion, Lirien could call it mine.

Vessa looked at the keys, not at me. 'That impression was made from this one.'

Lirien stepped forward. Her smile came before her words, neat and ready for use.

'A key impression can be made from any key with a similar cut. Vessa has carried that wax for years, hasn't she? I'm sure she has an explanation, but this seems a little premature.'
