Chapter 27: The Name They Use Beyond the Gate

The woman at Dov's counter clutches her swollen wrist while the supplier's invoice charges her for medicine that never arrived. The pack's account book lies open beside the parcels, waiting for someone to make the loss disappear into its columns.

'Sera, check the measure before I send this back,' Dov says. 'He billed us full price again.'

The woman keeps her wrapped wrist close to her body. Kael stands beside the parcels, his hand hovering over them before he lowers it to his side.

'I can look at it,' he says.

Dov sets the brass weights from the worktable in front of him. 'You can wait with those.'

The supplier's figures run along the bottom of the page in a narrow hand. The jars Dov set out hold less than the invoice claims. The shortage is small. The charge is full.

I check the entries again. If I let the pack's books swallow the difference, I'll be the one expected to explain it. The supplier is counting on that.

'How much did he charge for what he left out?' I ask Dov.

'Full price. He has a very fine opinion of his arithmetic.'

'Then the difference comes back in goods, not as a credit on the pack account.' I turn the book so Dov can see my figures. 'Ask for the missing measure in the next delivery. Put it against the clinic's order.'
