Chapter 28: The Record That Never Took

I ask Eln to point out the founding-register entry that records my suspension while the clerks and petitioners listen.

She holds the challenge papers against the council table. The petitioners have gathered along the far wall, waiting for their own matters. None of them leaves.

'You have said my Luna record authority was suspended,' I say. 'Where was that entered?'

Eln looks down at the paper in her hands. 'The suspension was procedural and temporary. I applied the current seal in good faith. No one brought the founding-register requirement to my attention before the vote closed.'

The amber shimmer gathers around her head. Her spoken words continue. Beneath them, another voice reaches me, thin and immediate.

I trusted the panel to carry it. If she makes this about the register, I have nothing.

I hold that thought still. The scrape of a chair, the clerks' pens, the murmur from the petitioners all drop away. Eln's sentence remains clear. Then the room returns.

She has answered. She thinks the answer is enough.

'Which entry?' I ask.

Eln lifts her chin. 'The suspension was recorded in the council proceedings.'

'That is not the founding register.'

Her eyes move to Cass. Cass has not shifted from her place beside the record table. Her hands remain folded behind her back.
