Chapter 37: What the Finding Costs Him
Kael turns from the examiner's finding page to me. 'Will you let me answer for my part in the rejection before the panel?'
The petitioners can still read the twins' founding marker. His question reaches them too. He has chosen to ask where no answer can be made private again.
An amber shimmer gathers around his head. Beneath his spoken words, I hear the thought he has not offered aloud: I will not ask her to carry this for me.
The surrounding voices disappear. His thought remains, plain and bright. I let the room return before I answer.
'You may speak for yourself,' I say. 'Do not ask me to make it easier.'
'I will not.'
He does not reach for me. He does not ask whether I believe him now, or whether this is enough. He waits for the answer to the question he actually asked.
I wanted to know whether his promise to tell the panel the truth would survive the petitioners hearing it first. A promise made in private costs less.
The examiner still holds the finding. The page has not entered the council record, but its contents have crossed the space between us and the people gathered to witness them.
