Chapter 16: The Poisoned Cup
The captain grinned down at us from the wall, lifted his thumb so the claw caught the torchlight, and walked away.
"I'll kill him," Dane said.
"You'll go to the north gate."
"Brenna..."
"The steward put you on the night watch for a reason. If you stay, she knows we know."
"And if I go, you're alone."
"I'm never alone. I have a hound, a cook and a thread in my chest."
He looked at me for a long time.
Then he went, and I felt every step of it pull.
Maud came up to my new room an hour later, with a bowl of warm milk that smelled of honey and something green.
"The maid brought it," she said. "From Rowena's hand. She says you're to drink it all."
I leaned in and breathed.
It was a faint, bitter, grassy smell.
"Wolfsbane," I said.
"A pinch. Enough to put a horse to sleep for a night."
"She wants me limp, not dead."
"Aye. The baby's worth too much."
Maud set the bowl on the table, and her hands were steady, which was how I knew how angry she was.
"I can pour it in the privy and tell them you drank it," she said. "Or I can smash the bowl and say you did."
"Or you can do neither."
"Brenna."
"They're going to carry me out of this castle tonight," I said. "I want to see where."
"No."
"Maud, listen. The captain was on that wall. He's going to take me somewhere quiet, and Rowena will be waiting, and she'll say things she won't say in front of anyone."
"And you'll be a sack of flour on a cart."
"I'll be a sack of flour with ears."
