Chapter 6: The Quarters
The colonel's quarters were a brick duplex at the end of a quiet street on base.
There was a flag on the porch and a soldier in a parked truck out front.
Inside there was almost nothing.
A couch, a table, two chairs, a bookshelf of field manuals, and a kitchen that had clearly never been cooked in.
"Your room is at the end of the hall," he said, setting my duffel bag down by the door. "The lock works. The window has a bar across the frame. I'm across from you."
"It's very clean."
"I'm not here much."
I opened his refrigerator.
It held a jar of mustard, a bag of coffee beans and a bag of frozen peas.
"Colonel."
"Yes?"
"What do you eat?"
"Whatever the mess hall has."
"Judd," I said, trying it out for the first time. "You are a grown man and a commander of soldiers, and you have a bag of peas."
"The peas are for the ribs."
That startled a laugh out of me.
He looked at me for a second, and the corner of his mouth moved.
An hour later I had sent his captain to the commissary with a list.
By seven there were eggs in a pan and bread in the toaster.
We ate at the little table across from each other, and neither of us talked.
I noticed that he cut his toast into exact squares.
I noticed that he stopped chewing every time I reached for the salt.
When the plates were clear, I stood up.
"Take your shirt off."
He went completely still.
"Your ribs," I said quickly. "The tape from the ER is coming loose. I can see it through the cotton. I'm a nurse, remember."
