Chapter 29: Not for a House
Laurent sat very still beside me.
"No," he repeated, testing the refusal slowly on his tongue.
"No."
The frogs went on singing.
Inside, I heard Aurore stop moving around the kitchen, the way she did when she was listening at a door.
"I was engaged once to pay off a note," I said. "I won't be married to empty out a house."
"That isn't what I meant."
"It's what you said. You said marry me so she's out by dark." I looked at him. "That's a reason to marry for Odile, Laurent. You've been doing things for Odile your whole life. You don't have to do this one."
He opened his mouth.
He shut it again.
He looked down at the Cup full of pecans.
"I made a mess of that," he said at last.
"You did."
"I've wanted to ask you since the night in the clearing. And when I finally did, I asked you the way my aunt would have." He rubbed his good hand over his face. "Like it was a contract with a clause in it."
"Clause nine."
