Chapter 30: The Auction
The whole parish came to Belle Rive on the thirteenth.
They came the way they'd come to the harvest ball, in their good coats, and this time nobody pretended it was for the punch.
The grooms led the mares out one by one onto the lawn below the gallery.
Twenty-two of them.
I knew every one by name.
Papa had sat on the fence and told Laurent each of them was a fool's horse.
Odile sat in her rocker at the top of the steps in black silk, with a new prayer book on her knee.
It was smaller than the old one.
Beside her stood the auctioneer from New Iberia, with his gavel and his little table.
And beside him, a man in a planter's hat I'd never seen before, who looked at Odile before he did anything at all.
"Who is that?" I whispered.
"Her cousin's husband, from Opelousas," Laurent said. "He's never bought a horse in his life."
He stood beside me on the lawn with both arms whole, in shirtsleeves, his face very calm.
They were his mares.
He had foaled half of them himself.
He couldn't bid a dollar on any of them.
