Chapter 22: Signed
My lawyer's voice was dry on the phone.
"He signed the divorce, the note to his father, and the page that says the downstairs suite is yours alone. He did not read any of it twice."
"Did he say anything?"
"He asked me to tell you he was sorry. I told him I bill by the hour."
I laughed in the supply room until my tech looked in to check on me.
Saturday afternoon I drove to my parents' house in Boise, the small one with the porch my father painted every spring.
I had the signed pages in a folder, and I wanted my mother to hold them.
She held them for a long time and then said, "Well."
That was all, and it was plenty.
At three a green pickup I knew pulled up to the curb.
Colin's father got out slowly.
He wore a clean shirt and carried a white envelope in one hand, and he stood at the bottom of the porch steps.
"Mr. Lund," he said to my father. "Ma'am. I won't come in."
"You're welcome to," my father said.
"I'd rather say it here."
He cleared his throat.
In four years of holidays, I had never heard him say more than ten words in a row.
"My son paid me back Thursday," he said. "Twelve thousand, from the sale of his car. I took it to the bank this morning, and I took out the same amount in cash."
He climbed one step and held out the envelope.
"He told me it was for Jenna's family. He lied about her, and he lied about what for. But the money came out of my roof account to help your people, and I mean it to get there."
