Chapter 12: Under Oath

"Yes," Elias said.

He did not raise his voice.

"I have loved the Luna of Holt for six years."

The terrace made a sound I had never heard from a crowd.

It was not a gasp, and it was not a murmur.

It was two hundred people all breathing in at once.

I could not move.

Bastian said, "What?"

The King did not look at him.

"Say the rest," he said to Elias.

"I was ordered to guard her the day after the bonding," Elias said.

"I did, and I never reached for her except to pull her out of danger."

"Last night, after the scroll was signed and the Alpha had given me her file, she kissed me."

"I kissed her back."

"That is all I have done, and I would do it again."

The King's eyes narrowed.

"You speak boldly for a man who might lose his post."

"It is only a post, Your Majesty."

Somebody in the Holt rows made a small noise, half a laugh and half a sob.

Odette stepped forward.

"He is lying for her," she said. "Of course he is. A man in love will say anything."

"Under the Court moon, no wolf lies and keeps his strength," the King said coldly. "Do you wish to test it?"

Odette went quiet.

The King turned his chair a quarter toward Bastian.

"Alpha. Six winters ago the Luna of Holt had a fever. I am told you sat with her until it broke."

"Yes," Bastian said at once.

"Under the moon?"

"Yes."

I saw it then.

A faint silver line traced down the side of Bastian's neck, from his jaw to the base of his throat.
