Chapter 4: The Hall
By noon the great hall was packed to the doors.
The pack stood shoulder to shoulder along the walls. Women held children on their hips. The eight elders sat at the long table, and Bastian sat at the head of it with his jaw set.
He had not come to find me all morning.
I stood in the center of the floor with Elias a few steps behind me.
Bastian's mother rose first.
"I raised my son to be fair," she began. "Six years ago the old King forced a bride on him, and he accepted her without a word."
"For six years he has been patient. For six years the Holt cradle has sat empty."
She turned to face the pack.
"A Luna's first duty is to give the pack heirs. This one has given us nothing. The bond has failed because she is barren, and that is why my son must be freed."
A low murmur rolled through the hall.
Someone near the back said, "Six years," and somebody else answered, "That's true."
Odette pressed a handkerchief to her mouth.
"Please," she said, in a trembling voice. "Mara has been so good to us. I only want her treated kindly."
Bastian's mother patted Odette's hand and kept her eyes on me.
"Well, Luna? Do you deny it?"
The oldest elder lifted a finger.
"The Luna may answer."
I took one slow step forward.
I had practiced nothing. I had slept three hours with my hand on the latch of my own door.
But my voice came out steady.
"I do not deny that I have borne no child," I said. "I would be glad to be examined by any healer in this pack, in front of everyone in this hall."
"I will tell you now what she will find."
