Chapter 13: Back Seat of a Truck
Rudy found him at midnight, walking down Pecan Row Road in the dark with his coat open and his bag over his shoulder.
He didn't ask a single question.
He pulled the county pickup onto the gravel shoulder, leaned across, and pushed the passenger door open.
"Get in."
"I'm fine," Cooper said.
"You're six miles from anywhere with a heart condition. Get in, Coop."
Cooper got in.
Rudy drove to the river without speaking and parked on the bank where they had fished.
He cut the engine, and for a while they sat and listened to the water.
"He's a match," Cooper said finally.
"I figured."
"You figured?"
"Cooper, I told you. Nobody gives that much blood for a root canal." Rudy rubbed his beard. "I just didn't have the guts to say what I thought it was. It sounded too good to be true."
"It's a mess is what it is."
"What did you tell him? Rudy asked.
"No."
Rudy turned his head slowly.
