Chapter 7: Yes
Jonas's bedroom was at the end of the upstairs hall, and Cooper had never seen the inside of it.
He stood in the doorway at ten o'clock with his hands in his pockets and his heart going so hard that his shirt moved.
A single lamp burned on the nightstand.
The bed was wide and plain, made up with white sheets, and Jonas sat on the edge of it with his boots off, waiting.
"Come here," Jonas said.
"I've been saying no to everything for a year. I'm done."
"Then say what you want."
"You." Cooper crossed the floor. "I want you, Jonas. I've wanted you since I was eighteen years old and you carried my mother's groceries to her car."
Jonas's eyes closed.
He opened them again, dark and slow, and he reached out and took Cooper by the belt loops and drew him between his knees.
"I haven't done this before," Cooper said. "With anyone. I should say it plainly."
"I figured."
"Does it bother you?"
"It undoes me." Jonas's hands slid up under the hem of his shirt. "I'm going to take my time with you. And I want to hear you say my name while I do it."
"I'm not shy."
"Good. Prove it."
He drew the shirt up and over Cooper's head and dropped it on the floor.
Cooper stood in the lamplight with his thin ribs showing and the pale scar of the old catheter low on his belly.
He made himself not fold his arms.
Jonas looked at him.
It was not pity. Cooper would have known pity.
It was the look of a man afraid to break something he had wanted for years.
"God, you're beautiful," Jonas said roughly.
"I'm skinny."
"You're everything."
He pressed his mouth to the scar.
Cooper's breath left him in a rush, and his hands found Jonas's hair.
Jonas kissed lower, slow and warm, along the line of his hip, and Cooper's knees began to give.
"Lie down with me," Jonas said.
They went down onto the white sheets together.
Jonas undressed him the rest of the way, with a patience that was almost cruel.
He stopped at every new place to learn it with his hands and his mouth.
