Chapter 13: The Shoe Store
"It's my laptop," I said. "My name's on the lid in red nail polish."
"Your name's on a lot of things, sweetie." Corrie smiled up at me from the bottom step. "Blaine's name is on more."
Reuben came down one step.
He didn't raise his voice. He never does.
"Corrie. Off my porch."
"It's a step, Uncle Reuben."
"Off my step, then. And off my road."
She looked at him, then at me, then at his arms, which had been around me just moments before.
"Cute," she said, and walked back to her little white car.
The Tennessee plates kicked up gravel all the way to the trees.
I picked up the framed photo of my father from the top of the box.
The glass had a thumbprint on it. Not mine.
I wiped it on my shirt.
"I can get the laptop back," Reuben said. "It's your property. One call to the chief."
"And the Courier runs 'Mayor Sends Police to Nephew's Condo.'"
"The Courier doesn't run anything you don't hand them."
"Let him keep it." I tucked the photo under my arm. "Every speech on it is in my head anyway."
