Snowed In With My Stepbrother novel · Chapter 21 of 24

Chapter 21: Mother

I went down in Finlay's jumper and my ceilidh tights, with my hair everywhere.

I didn't care who saw.

The front door was open.

The cold came across the hall flagstones.

Elspeth was already there in her wheelchair, in her dressing gown and pearls, with her stick across her knees.

The housekeeper stood beside her.

Alasdair was on the half-landing of the stairs in his shirt sleeves, one big hand on the banister, not coming down.

My mother was on the top step outside.

She had on her long camel coat and no hat, and her hair was flat with snow.

A taxi sat on the gravel behind her with its engine running and its meter going.

She looked smaller than I'd ever seen her.

"Ailsa," she said. "Thank God."

"What do you want, Mum?"

"Get your things." She said it quickly, as though she'd practised it in the taxi. "Get your coat and your things and come with me. Now, before they all wake up properly."

"Come where?"

"Glasgow. Your flat. Just till I'm on my feet." She reached for my hand. "It'll be you and me, like before. Like when you were small. We were all right then, weren't we? Just us two?"
