Chapter 11: The Shower
In the lift down from the board room, with two directors standing behind us, he leaned to my ear.
"Tonight," Antone said, in a perfectly level voice, "I mean to have you against a wall until you cannot stand."
I kept my face still.
The directors looked at the floor numbers.
One of them coughed.
"Is that a threat?" I said, just as level.
"It is an appointment."
The doors opened on the ground floor, and he held my elbow all the way across the lobby.
We did not speak in the car.
His hand rested on my knee the whole way up the Panier.
At every turn of the road I felt it move higher.
By the time we reached the house I could not have told you my own name.
He shut the front door.
He took my coat, hung it on the hook beside Pascal's navy one, and took my hand.
He led me up four flights to the bathroom under the roof.
The old tiles were white, and the shower stood in a stone alcove.
He turned the water on hot.
Steam rolled into the room.
"Undress," he said.
"You first," I said.
"I give an order, and you answer with a counter," he said.
"You like it," I said.
He did not deny it.
He stripped off his jacket and his tie and his shirt, slowly, watching me watch him.
I undid my blouse and let it fall.
I unzipped my skirt and stepped out of it, and he stopped halfway through his belt.
Neither of us said anything.
I stood in my underwear in the steam, with my skin going pink from the heat.
He looked at me for a long time.
He finished undressing.
He took my hand and drew me in under the water.
It came down hot and hard on both of us.
