Chapter 22: Candlemas
On Candlemas the abbey of Saint-Victor smelled of wax and hot sugar, and Antone put a green candle in my hand.
The crypt was packed to the walls.
Half of Marseille came on the second of February to have its candles blessed and its navettes eaten, the little boat-shaped biscuits that taste of orange blossom.
We stood at the back with a hundred strangers.
His hand closed over mine round the candle, and the flame leaned between us.
"Do not drop it," he said, close to my ear. "Marie-Ange says if it goes out on the way home you will have bad luck all year."
"I've had my bad luck."
"Then keep what comes after."
He bought a paper bag of navettes from the baker's stall at the door.
On the steps outside he broke one in half and held a piece to my mouth.
I took it from his fingers with my lips.
His thumb stayed against my chin a moment too long, and a woman beside us coughed.
