Chapter 5: Three Hands
"It's a mate bond," said Hetta, stirring a pot of barley with a spoon the size of an oar.
"What is?"
"The thing that makes you drop things and forget to breathe every time he walks through my kitchen."
I put down the knife I was holding.
I was peeling turnips at the long table, my first morning as a kitchen hand, and I was not dropping anything and I was breathing fine.
"I'm tired," I said.
"You've been tired since the day you got here, and it only happens when he comes within thirty paces."
She pointed the spoon at my chest.
"Wolves feel it in the belly first.
"Then the other person's heartbeat in their own ribs, like a second drum.
"Fated mates, girl.
"It happens to one wolf in a thousand, and the stories are all about people who weep over it."
"He told me he doesn't know me."
"He's an Alpha. They lie about the things they want most, and loudest."
"He said it in front of a room full of men."
"Did he look at you when he said it?"
I thought about it.
"No."
"There you are."
She went back to her barley.
I peeled turnips with a hot face, and for the first time since Dunmere I let myself wonder why a man who had his pick of any woman in the north would choose to put the one that made his heart jump in the scullery.
I did not like any answer I came up with.
At noon the kitchen door banged, and a woman in riding leathers walked in.
She was tall and wiry, with two white-blond braids pinned up over her head, a hawk nose and pale cold eyes.
